FAQs
Decom is TODAY and woooo-boy are we excited! Here is a handy last-minute Q&A to answer your burning questions and insure you have a safe and wonderful Decompression. The rest of the frequently asked questions are below:
Q. Is Decom really going to suck?
A. NO! Decom now comes with a 100% Awesome guarantee. If you don’t find it 100% Awesome, you don’t have to come back next year.
Q. But it’s going to be cold! And rainy!
A. Tonight’s weather forecast is 42 degrees and rain. Fortunately for you,
the event is 80% inside. Dress in layers just like you would on the Playa
… there’s tons of cool stuff inside for those of you who don’t want to
get wet, and even more outside for the intrepid and rain-geared.
Q. Oh no! I forgot to buy tickets!
A. No worries… we built in a cushion of tickets just for slackers like
you. They will be $40 at the door.
Q. I bought tickets but can’t go. NOW WHAT?
A. It is your responsibility to sell or gift your tickets – we can’t give
refunds. Have the person to whom you sell or gift your tickets give your
FULL name, spelled correctly, at the door.
Q. How do I know when and where my friend’s band is going on?
A. This information is now available on the website. There is a list of
all the content here: http://nycdecompression.org/day-of-event/projects/, plus a full What/Where/When with times and everything that you can download and print out from here:
http://nycdecompression.org/day-of-event/what-where-when-map/. We will also have hard copies of the What/Where/When available for you to peruse at the event.
Q. So it’s really not going to suck?
A. No. It’s not going to suck. Honest.
See you at Decom!
Note: If your question is not answered below, please email us at info@nycdecompression.org and we will do our best to address your question.
Q: Is there a lost & found?
A: Aviator Sports, the venue, has a lost & found and a list of all items found after Decom. Their number is 718-758-7500.
Q: Can I sell/transfer/gift my will call ticket?
A: Yes, you can sell/transfer/gift your will call ticket. Just make sure that whomever is coming in under your ticket knows your full name. No, we do not need to know who you sold/transferred/gifted your ticket to.
Q: Will there be tickets at the door?
A: Due to the number of people (a.k.a. slackers) who somehow missed the ticket sales deadline that has been advertised for weeks, the Decom Team will be making a limited number of tickets available at the door.
Q: Are minors allowed in?
A: Minors are allowed to attend during the Kids Hours of 4 pm – 8 pm. All minors must be accompanied by their parent or guardians. Children under 13 are free.
Q: What are the hours of the event?
A: 4 pm – 4 am
Q: Will alcohol be served?
A: Yes. There will be bars selling beer, wine, and liquor. Prices start at $4.
Q: Will food be served?
A: The venue has a food court which will be open until 2 am during the event; food will be available for purchase.
Q: Can I smoke?
A: You can smoke outside, but leave no trace. If you smoke anywhere inside the building, you will be kicked out of the event.
Q: Is there a coat check?
A: Yes, the venue is operating a coat check for a slight fee.
Q: Is there recycling?
A: Yes, there is recycling at the venue.
Q: How much space is available?
A: Lots. Just like at Burning Man, expect to experience concentrated activities, as well as art scattered in “deep playa.” There are two large indoor spaces, but there are not many small rooms.
Q: What do I wear?
A: Wear whatever clothing makes you happy. Self-expression is key. Please keep in mind that part of the event is outdoors, so you may want to bring outwear appropriate for late-October nighttime weather. Also, please note that per New York City laws, toplessness for women and nudity for anyone are not legal in places where alcohol is being sold. If you do not like this, please contact your City Council representative.
Q: What do I do if I want to bring art? sculpture? performance? music?
A: You sign up through our website. The submission deadline is October 10th. One of our organizers will be in touch with you within about 48 hours. It is advisable to sign up as soon as possible to make scheduling and mapping easy for volunteer organizers. If you have any further questions, please communicate directly with the organizers who respond to your form submission. If your project needs power or has any other special needs, please submit it as soon as possible and be sure to specify your power needs.
Q: Can I do fire performance?
A: Decom is a fire-friendly event and we would love to have people of all skill levels come out and throw down. We are trying to do these events in a manner that builds a positive relationship with the city and especially with the fire department. If you want to spin, please choose the category “fire performance” under the project submission page. Under the description, please say what you would like to spin (ex: poi). If you have a group that performs and you want a scheduled show, just say so. All fire performers are encouraged to have performers’ insurance, and all fire performers must sign a waiver releasing the venue and Decompression from liability.
Q: Can I do aerial performance?
A: If you are an aerial acrobat, we welcome you to perform. Please sign up to perform via our website as soon as possible, and specify that you are an aerialist. All aerialists must have performers’ insurance, and must sign a waiver releasing the venue and Decompression from liability.
Q: How do I sign up to volunteer?
A: Please sign up to volunteer!!! You can sign up through our website, http://nycdecompression.org/volunteer/.
Q: Can I get a comp ticket?
A: Please refer to our comp policy. No one is guaranteed a comp ticket.
Q: Can I go visit the venue before Decom?
A: Yes, and we highly encourage it if you’re bringing a project! Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field is open to the public. However, please do not speak with staff at the venue about the event. If you have questions, please contact the Decom organizers at info@nycdecompression.org and we will get you an answer to your question.
Q: How do I get to Decom on public transportation?
A: Take the 2 train to the last stop in Brooklyn, Flatbush Avenue. Exit the train and look for the Target and Payless Shoe Store. Outside the Payless, there is a bus stop. Wait there for the Q35. Take the Q35 for a few miles. You will pass the Kings Plaza shopping center on the left, and go over the Belt Parkway. You’ll see a sign for Floyd Bennett Field on the right. Take the 2nd bus stop after that, which will drop you outside of Terminal 5 and 6 where Aviator Sports is housed. Walk across Flatbush Avenue and enter the giant parking lot that leads to the facility. It takes approximately an hour via public transportation from Downtown Brooklyn or the Financial District.
Q: How easy is it to get to Decom using cars or car services?
A: In addition to knowing the full public transit access, it only costs about $12 to get from the venue to the end of the train line via car service. If you are driving yourself, it is a bit confusing to access the parking lot. Make a left at the Last Traffic Light before the bridge to the Rockaways, then follow the road signs to the sports complex and keep your eyes out for the airplanes. That is the entrance to the complex and the parking lot. There will be free parking available at the venue. Cars can be left in the parking lot overnight if people prefer to take public transportation home late at night. Organizers are also hoping to have a shuttle bus running between the end of the train line and the venue, but this is unconfirmed as yet. (If this is a major concern for you, you are invited to help figure out this logistical element.)
